Beijing is for me one of the most interesting and vivid cities in China, and with the preparation for the Olympics on the way it becomes even better.
One thing to keep an eye on are the taxi drivers who are even within local people's assessment some of the worst in Chinese big cities. Make sure 1. the driver turns on the meter, 2. then, only pay what is on the meter and ask your change back, 3. get your destination written in Chinese (the hotels are very helpful on this!), 4. and in case of problems, don`t argue too much but just write down the license number and ask your hotel to report to the taxi association complaint hotline.

Don't go during Japanese Golden Week. Not because of the Japanese tourists, but because it is also a Chinese holiday. VERY crowded everywhere.

BEWARE of the art student scam. Young girls will start a conversation with you under the false pretense that they are art students. Then they will ask you to come see their art exhibit for a few minutes. They are really trying to sell you cheap chinese art for high prices.

Be careful at Stone Forest . Don't let yourself be engaged with minority folkloric dancing groups as they will try to clip you out of 100 RMB. The complaint service of our hotel helped us to get this 100 RMB back

If it is raining, dont hesitate to do your tour to the Great Wall. You will find that the rain becomes a positive as you will almost have the wall to yourselves as all the other tourists have ventured clear of it in the hope of a nicer day. DON'T and I must stress DON'T go into any bars where the prices of drinks are not visible because they call them business traps and once caught, nobody, not even the Police can help you. They can charge up to $25 US dollars a drink if you're not careful. They have some big men who ensure your prompt payment as well.

Stayed at Lu Song Yuan Hotel - Beijing, China.

The Lu Song Yuan Hotel is relatively central to everything. The staff is more than willing to help out when getting you going in the right direction. Just ask one of the staff to write your destination on a piece of paper so that you can get a taxi to take you there. Taxis are cheap and plentiful. If you end up at one of the tourist stops and a taxi driver wants to negotiate a fare opt instead for flagging down one from the street instead...you'll save a couple of dollars this way. With a little practice the Beijing subway is relatively easy to get around on. If you're staying at the Lu Song Yuan Hotel restaurants are plentiful in the area...at least the local restaurants are. I had no problem with the local food and began to enjoy taking breakfast at one of the street vendors or in one of the noodle houses. The local food is tasty, interesting very inexpensive and I never had any problems with sickeness. There is an amazing variety of dishes to be found throughtout all of China and I think you're wasting a great opportunity to experience some great food by seeking out western restaurants while there.
There is one other note that I should make about travelling through Beijing and that is about being approached by local 'art students'. You'll likely encounter young fresh faced students whose English is exceptionally good. They usually hang out around most of the popular tourist sites and will approach you with an invitation to have a look at their artworks...exhibits which just happen to be ending that particular day. You'll be wasting your time going for this sales pitch and I would recommend declining when ever you're approached.

Stayed at Shangri-La Hotel Qingdao - Qingdao, China.

Upon Arrival at Qingdao airport, if you need to use the loo/toilet, do so before Immigration. I mention this because none of the passengers on our Dragon Air flight noticed the loos before Immigration. The signage is bad! Once you pass through Immigration, there's only one loo (seat) per toilet and the ladies were not happy when you're the 10th one in line.
On Departure, the departure tax office is located near the Duty Free Shop which I found out after going through Health Check and Customs checks. If you've got alcohol with you, not stuff that you bought from duty free, do pack it into your check-in luggage. Our unopened small bottle of Bacardi was taken away from us. There was no signage about this. No one at check-in asked us about our contents in the hand carry. I demanded my bottle back, opened it, pour out the contents and threw it in the bin which incidentally is hard to find.

Great hotel to go around shanghai, right on top of a MRT station, 30 mins to pudong airport but not near any food place. When walking along nanjing road, don't be fooled by the chinese people asking for road direction, they are testing if you are tourist and will con you into following them into restaurant or pub which charge exorbitant amount.

Stayed at China Merchants Hotel - Guangzhou, China.

Beware folks - drivers in China are reckless. Watch where you going, if you are not careful, you can easily end up in a road accident. The other is the limitless spitting incidents that I witnessed. You can easily find the remaining residue on pavements, roads etc. I actually had my luggage wheels going over one of them. Very unfortunate indeed.

If you take a tour, just make sure that they don't take you around for expensive shopping tour. We didn't know since this is our first time to take a tour, so eventhough we only asked for specific locations to visit, they still insist on bringing us there, which we think was wasting of time. The first day we followed, second day just refuse and stick with the original plan. The third day we just go around ourselves. A little bit tricky since the taxi driver can't hardly understand my 'little' chinese, but it was fun and interesting.
