Take the subway to the Lama temple - its my favorite place in Beijing and easy to reach (a subway station on the circle line is named Lama Temple).
A good restuarant with a local flavor can be found near the new Silk Market building. At the corner where the market is located, turn right and walk past the DVD stores and you will soon come to a restaurant. They have one english menu. I had pork and tofu, and it was delicious, for 18 RMB. For good Beijing duck, try the Duck King, near the Macdonalds in front of the SciTech Plaza. Bargain hard at the Silk Market. Don't be surprised if you pay less than 1/5 of the original asking price. Walk away a few times to get an idea of what the real price should be.

Bought some fake watches for friends and myself. Don't buy from the guys at Nanjing Road. Go to the fake market. Don't pay more than 20 EURO, doesn't matter what they tell you. I was shopping at the Decathlon outlet. It's worth the trip to Padong. Decathlon is french sports outfitter that is really huge and prices are unbelievable.

Across the street there is a small walk-in street market with a large variety of clothes, jewelry, bags, etc. If you go there, you can find some incredible deals (if you make the right offers). I bought sunglasses there. The quoted price was 130. I paid 10. I also bought a bag there for 30 that was quoted at 175 and a cell phone holder for 30 that was quoted at 195. Just make an offer and when they say no, walk away. If you go out the hotel and turn left up Xidan Bei, you can get a subway ride directly to Wang Fujing Da Jie. This is the famous shopping street in Beijing. There are many shops, as well as a small street market. At the street market, I bought two brass dragons that were quoted at 195 for one. I paid 50 for two. There is also the famous Peking Duck restaurant (Qunjudao, I believe) at Wang Fujing. The name is in Chinese, so you will need to ask. I have been there twice now and will go there everytime I am in Beijing -- It is SO good! The hotel is also very near Tianamin square and the Forbidden City. The last time I was there, I hired a taxi from Tianamin square and he took me to the great wall and showed me around for the day. It was 150 for the entire day. Near Wang Fujing is also street famous for the food vendors. There are many carts there selling assorted food on-a-stick. Wandering that street and purchasing assorted goodies is almost a full night. They have beef, goat, lamb, chicken, insects, worms, fruit and even ice cream.

At the Lo Wu Shopping center, top floor, great "Yam-cha" (Dim sum restaurants) can be found at very reasonable prices.
And yes, remember to always bargain during your shopping spree at the shopping center. ENJOY : )

For Shanghai: Thumbs up to M on the Bund for brunch, Jean Georges for dinner, Xintiandi for shopping, the new art area (can't remember the name). Over-rated are the French Concession, 3 on the Bund for shopping, Shanghainese food.

Without question, buy pearls in Beijing. There are two or three good places, the hotel staff can give you directions to give the taxi driver. The old Silk Market (Russian Market) has moved to a new building and isn't so much fun, but you can still get good bargains.

Beijing is surprisingly more modern than I had expected. The streets are also clean of rubbish but watch out for spittle on the roads/pavements as you walk - the habbit of spitting dates back to imperial days of old.Getting around in taxis is quite convenient but can get expensive during traffic jams. For shopping (clothes and bags), I would recommend Ya Xiu shopping centre where most of the locals also shop. Be prepared to bargain though - ask for a quarter of the quoted price as a guide and walk away if they protest. If they want to make the sale, they'll call you back. Don't bother to go to the famous Quan Ju De Roast Duck restaurant - most expensive and unsatisfying food we had in Beijing.

My visits to Shenzhen have been limited to very intense shopping excursions at the Lowu Centre - a 10-minute walk from the hotel.
Lowu is a great place to have clothes tailored at bargain prices. Bring your own favourite pieces to be copied, take along some clear pictures of what you'd like or flip through the hundreds of magazines the tailors have at their stall. There's also a huge fabric market on the fifth floor so once you know what you'd like made, you can have fun choosing material. Be prepared to bargain!
Massage is another service offered at Lowu and you generally need one after a few hours shopping. I'd recommend Jian Fu Mei Massage Centre on the fourth floor.
Then there are all the shops selling bags, shoes, jewellery and anything else you can think of. The day will be over before you know it and you'll be glad the hotel is only a short walk away.

Pearl's TV Towers, went on a Friday morning at about 10am. We were lucky not to encounter the massive crowd and the queue is very smooth which we heard not to visit the place during weekends. The museum just at the basement must not miss. Went to Nanjing Lu shopping mall for a walk. Is just like finding wally in the crowd. Xingyang market, must visit early in the morning as it gets very crowded in the late morning and early afternoon and you must really really bargain. Depend on how good is your bargaining skill, you can get 80-200% off the price. Watch out for colour runs on that 'North Face' jackets or any other brands and also make sure there is no 2 'Brand's' sticking on that 'branded' t-shirt you are buying.

Stayed at Shangri-La Hotel Hangzhou - Hangzhou, China.

This was my 3rd time in Hangzhou. Found it the best this time with all the construction works around the lake finally (mostly?) finished. No doubt HZ is a pretty place and we will definitely go back again. Had lunch at Lou Wai Lou (opposite our hotel) which was OK but not fantastic. Dinner at Jade Crystal, a restaurant located at Xihu Xintiendi, which is a new and must-see area for visitors.
Recommend to shop at the state-owned silk museum/factory for upmarket scarves, blouse, quilt, etc, while cheap scarves, pajamas, underwear, etc can be found in Silk Street, which is only 15 minutes away by taxi from Shangri-La Hotel.
