T Vasse 24 August 2005
Stayed at  Paradise Yangshuo Resort - Guilin, China.
The hotel is located in the town centre which you do not notice when you are in the hotel or at the swimming pool. Close to the main shopping street and where you can rent bicycles. We went to Li River, Moon hill, and made a boat trip. You can hire a guide or make your own tour. Just turn right and left whenever you want, it is hard to get lost because you will always stay between two mountain ridges. Bring a map for global orientation.

Stayed at  Shangri-La Golden Flower Hotel Xian - Xian, China.
There is no taxi stand at the airport, instead, there are drivers at the arrival hall approaching the arriving passangers. They asked for RMB220 and that's a high price, almost doubled. A taxi going from Shangri-La to the Airport would be about 100. Most of the taxis offer day tour service. You may check against the price of different drivers. I hired a taxi to Hwa Shan, only RMB550 a day. The hotel can also arrange transportation but the price is...1200! There are also public transportation at the train station. That's a good time to experience the reality, no queue! People are squeezing in. That's the fun part of this trip.

Stayed at  Harmony Hotel - Beijing, China.
Yummy & cheap restaurant about 50M on the left when getting out of the hotel front entrance. Taxi to airport about 80 yuen.

Stayed at  Marco Polo Beijing, The - Beijing, China.
The best way to get around if you are in beijing for a few day is taxi. For value, beijing taxi is cheap and less hassle than subway or bus.

M Mirman 31 May 2005
Stayed at  New Harbour Serviced Apartments - Shanghai, China.
Visited Shanghai then onto Beijing. Used cabs and subway for most travel. Did have the services of a friend who is Chinese to assist in translation as cab drivers don't speak English. Go to Jin Mao tower, take elevator to Cloud 9 the club on top of building, nicer than observation deck with same view and food and beverage available.

M Hollombe 22 May 2005
Stayed at  Mayfair Hotel Shanghai - Shanghai, China.
Taxi rides to the Bund, Old Shanghai and just about everywhere were under 30 Yuan. Don't hesitate.

Stayed at  Traders Hotel Beijing - Beijing, China.
Beijing is for me one of the most interesting and vivid cities in China, and with the preparation for the Olympics on the way it becomes even better. One thing to keep an eye on are the taxi drivers who are even within local people's assessment some of the worst in Chinese big cities. Make sure 1. the driver turns on the meter, 2. then, only pay what is on the meter and ask your change back, 3. get your destination written in Chinese (the hotels are very helpful on this!), 4. and in case of problems, don`t argue too much but just write down the license number and ask your hotel to report to the taxi association complaint hotline.

Stayed at  Broadway Mansions Shanghai - Shanghai, China.
The Broadway Mansions Hotel is still known in Chinese by the name Shanghai mansions (Shanghai Da Sha) - useful knowledge if you are taking a taxi!

Stayed at  Jinglun Hotel - Beijing, China.
Take the subway to the Lama temple - its my favorite place in Beijing and easy to reach (a subway station on the circle line is named Lama Temple). A good restuarant with a local flavor can be found near the new Silk Market building. At the corner where the market is located, turn right and walk past the DVD stores and you will soon come to a restaurant. They have one english menu. I had pork and tofu, and it was delicious, for 18 RMB. For good Beijing duck, try the Duck King, near the Macdonalds in front of the SciTech Plaza. Bargain hard at the Silk Market. Don't be surprised if you pay less than 1/5 of the original asking price. Walk away a few times to get an idea of what the real price should be.

Stayed at  Zhao An Hotel - Shanghai, China.
We used subway and walking as our main ways of getting around, taxi only being used to transfer to the railway station. walking enabled us to see more of the city, a good example was the walk from Xintiandi to the Wu Gardens, walking down Dajing Lu from Renmin Lu to Henan Nanlu and then onto Fanbang Zhonglu gives a great insight into Shanghai life. As a first time visitor to China, crossing the roads was a challenge, however main junctions have traffic Assistants who help greatly. The best sights for us were the Wu Gardens and Shanghai Museum. We travelled by train to Suzhou, soft seat was fine and cheap, there is a ticket window at shanghai railway station clearly marked for english speakers, buy your tickets a day or so early, I didn't and had to opt for my third choice train time. The soft seat waiting room is comfortable and well organised, we used it again when travelling by train to Beijing. www.china-train-ticket.com were a problem, my train tickets were not delivered to my hotel, I had to ring their Beijing office to resolve this. After wasting several hours waiting for tickets to be delivered they had bought tickets for a cheaper and later train than they had contracted with me for, I had no more time to pursue this matter and so accepted the situation. On the train the 2 berth compartment was fine but the food in the restaurant car should be given a miss, plan to feed yourself.
